❄️ FLASH: 2023 Winter Classic Uniforms Unveiled!

Adidas and the NHL unveiled the uniforms the Penguins and Bruins will wear at the 2023 Winter Classic at Fenway Park this is an aesthetic Splash report for November 25th I’m Chris thanks for watching earlier this month the league announced the team crests for their Marquee outdoor game you can watch my previous flash report to get caught up on those details today we get to see how those logos are used on the uniforms let’s start with the host team the Boston Bruins will wear black on January 2nd the stripes and shoulder yoke are borrowed from sweaters

they wore in the early 1950s big bold yellow stripes around the waist and sleeves the numbers and lettering employ beige or vintage white as they call it and as the Bruins press release says it’s meant to look like this garment was found in a forgotten trunk deep in the back of an old skate shop for a heightened look of antique authenticity Adidas even added extra stitching to the felt letters and numbers to make it look like these old tattered sweaters have had to be repaired and re-stitched over the decades and that brings us to the

Penguins who went all in on vintage white with their tribute to the old Pittsburgh Pirates they’ve enlarged the upward angled p and recolored the entire sweater which was originally yellow in 1925.

also of note is the unique narrow shoulder yoke which is squared off on the ends instead of rounded and the stitching inside the yellow numbers is a really nice touch now this marks the first time that opposing teams in the Winter Classic will use the same color scheme yellow black and vintage white to be fair Boston has an extra Touch of brown on the

bear head Crest but that’s really it while this color overlap may seem inevitable with these two teams it didn’t have to be neither the Bruins nor Penguins were black and yellow when they joined the NHL Boston wore brown in 1924 Pittsburgh used powder blue when they entered in 1967 so this game could have been blue and brown okay but there’s more to this color story if you want to know some NHL history so here goes January 1980 the Pittsburgh Penguins suddenly changed colors in the middle of the season they dropped navy blue in favor of

black and gold the classic colors of the steel city right but guess who’s not happy about it the Boston Bruins claim exclusivity to black and gold in the NHL they say they had it first and longest depends fire back Pittsburgh wore those colors first with the Pirates in 1925 at which time the Bruins were wearing brown and gold and they wouldn’t switch to Black for another decade based on that precedent the NHL dismissed Boston’s objections and both teams went on wearing black and gold by the way on Twitter the pens reminded fans of the role

the Pirates played in the history of their own color palette and even stuck it to the Bruins a little to get that rivalry going but what you may not realize is the NHL Pirates were really the first pro sports team in Pittsburgh to wear black and gold at that time the baseball Pirates were blue and red and the Steelers didn’t exist yet so there’s some inane trivia for your next holiday party and that’s all for now drop a like on your way out if you don’t mind thanks again for watching and see you next time
