First Time Watching Ghostbusters Reaction, Review, & Breakdown | Flashback Video

hey guys it’s eddie and jacob
so today’s video is actually a throwback
this was our
first movie reaction that we did
in 2020 so almost a year ago this is
from 11 months ago
so we kind of wanted to test the waters
because again some of you said you’d be
interested in seeing us do
uh more movie related stuff so in order
to test the waters instead of recreating
the wheel
we’re just reposting one of our very
first videos that we ever
did which was jacob’s first time seeing
ghostbusters
so please let us know if this type
of reaction is something you’d like to
see more of because again we want to do
stuff that you guys actually
watch so without further ado let’s flash
back to 2020
time what are you supposed to be some
kind of a cosmonaut
no we’re exterminators somebody saw a
cockroach up on 12.
ghostbusters welcome to another episode
of modern retro where the old school
meets new schools
old school let’s go
i’m eddie and i’m jacob and we are
modern retro
shows so tell them what we’re doing
today boss

today we are doing
a movie review to ghostbusters
that’s right ghost busters
and we ain’t talking about the remake
we’re talking about the original
so this is your first time watching we
break it down with number one doing the
tail of the tape
and for anyone who remembers vhs tapes
we just go into
the factual basics of the movie yeah
then we do
our trivia and background after that
we’re going to give a synopsis and our
opinions
then we’re going to do our categories
and those are everybody’s favorite
so let’s get into the tale of the tape
so ghostbusters was released june 8th
1984. i was
six years old at the time your mom was
four years away from being born
you were you were 26 years away from
being born
you didn’t have to say that so it had a
budget of 30 million dollars which was
for the 1980s that was huge that was a
huge budget
it ended up grossing 282 million dollars
worldwide
which was the highest grossing comedy of
all time
uh at the time it was in theaters for
81 weeks
now it’s a big deal if you know a movie
plays for eight weeks 10 weeks 12 weeks
that’s a long time
81 weeks that’s over a year and a half
it was in the movie theaters
um i don’t i think vhs tapes were
already
uh either in the early stages of being
developed
because again history lesson for our
younger viewers uh
once a movie was out of the movie
theaters that was it
you know unless they played it on
television that’s why it was a big deal
when they were premiere
certain movies like gone with the wind
for example people hadn’t seen in like
40 50
years until it was on tv um
so once like a movie was out that’s it
you couldn’t see it anymore
but thankfully with the advent of
television but again you couldn’t
control when
they were gonna play a movie on
television there was no cable yet
so the vhs tape uh was you know a major
revolution because now you could watch a
movie whenever you wanted
rotten tomatoes gave it 97 and the
audience gave it 88
audiences what is wrong with you what is
wrong with you audience
shame of course there always has to be
one hot
take from one of these reviewers so
variety
had a three word review only
intermittently impressive that’s
that’s bad hot take variety not a good
look for you
so that’s the tail of the table
have not aged too well for sure um
so now we’re going to get into the
trivia and we start off with the
alternate casting so this one
has a huge backstory with the alternate
casting
so the movie was actually written by dan
aykroyd
the guy who plays ray um
and when he was writing it uh he was
writing it for him
and uh for his best friend john belushi
so for those who don’t know john belushi
definitely look him up he was one of the
original cast members of saturday night
live the 1975 crew
and he went on to become one of the
biggest comedy stars of all time
he did blues brothers animal house
seriously go see them if you haven’t
seen them definite classics
blues brothers is one we definitely
gotta check out so originally
the bill murray role peter venkman was
was written for john belushi
unfortunately before filming can start
john belushi
died in 1982 i believe
correct me if i’m wrong it was either 83
or 82 but i think it was 82.
uh some interesting alternate castings
for uh the role of peter venkman
michael keaton the guy who played batman
in the 1989 movie
he was a comedy star before he became a
serious actor
one of my favorite uh michael keaton
movies is night shift
if you haven’t seen it google it it is
about two nerdy white guys who work in a
morgue and become pimps
yes it’s an 80s movie another
interesting alternate casting
was steve guttenberg for those of you
who don’t know steve guttenberg you
definitely didn’t grow up in the 80s
steven gutenberg turn this down
he turned this down to do police academy
which
i gotta say i think definitely a good
choice
um now obviously the big one aside from
john belushi
was eddie murphy was supposed to appear
in the movie
eddie murphy well for him eddie murphy’s
the guy who did the voice for donkey and
shrek
yeah eddie murphy was a 90 like i was
saying
it’s difficult to explain how big
michael jackson was when we did the
reaction to uh billie jean
yeah it’s the same thing for eddie
murphy as far as a
just super movie comedian
star i mean in the early 80s eddie
murphy was it
he he had the number one tv show he had
the number one album
he had the number one movie at the time
he had beverly hills cop trading places
saturday night live
he had a number one selling album uh and
number one selling comedy tour
delirious raw he was the king
of comedy for a long time and to have
him
in ernie hudson’s role that is one of
like the biggest i think regrets
in movie history is if eddie murphy was
in that movie
it’s a completely different movie
because uh the way dan aykroyd wrote it
uh his character comes in
way earlier than ernie hudson eventually
comes into the movie
as ernie hudson shows up like halfway
through the movie
i think remember winston um
and and his character didn’t get much to
do yeah
oh what’s next on the agenda
in our opinion that’s right the synopsis
and opinion so
it’s basically a simple movie right yeah
what what’s the movie about it’s about
these four
people who um fight ghosts
and yeah yeah that’s basically it yeah
it’s about four doofuses well it’s about
three doofuses
who are scientists except for maybe egon
uh and they decide one day hey
let’s go bust some ghosts right
let’s go let’s go and wear like nuclear
accelerators on our back
and go and shoot some ghosts and hey
and the other guys are like great idea
let’s do it
i’m going to dig into my grandmother’s
inheritance that she left me and where
should we where should we build our uh
business
let’s get a firehouse why it’s got a
fire pole that’s
it that’s all that’s all we need that’s
all we need right
so eventually they start fighting ghost
and every one guy walks in is like
hey you guys are crazy i’m shutting this
whole thing
down oh you remember that guy nobody
likes walter peck
and then of course a giant marshmallow
man has to show up because
why not it’s the 80s right steps all
over manhattan
steps on st patrick’s cathedral and bill
murray’s like hey
not my house buddy and then
they almost sacrificed themselves they
saved new york city the end
what’s not to love i mean i i would love
to be there in that pitch meeting
because dan aykroyd actually believes in
ghosts
yeah he thinks ghosts are a real thing
so
you know when he was pitching this movie
and plus
there was obviously cover your ears for
this one
a lot of cocaine involved so yeah
i would have loved to be in on on that
pitch meeting
with a guy in the 80s whose best friend
just overdosed
who believes in ghosts who’s writing
this movie and has to explain
why is there a giant marshmallow man in
the in the finale
and then they had the bootleg cartoon
with the gorilla i don’t know what that
was all about
but in either case i love the cartoon on
saturday mornings
all the toys i had all the toys i had
the firehouse i had the ecto one i had
all that so we loved the movie
what’d you think of the movie it was
very good i liked it
yeah yeah all right so speaking of that
let’s get into the categories
so category favorite scene
the stay puft marshmallow man for me
if i was his age and i was when i saw
this definitely be the stay puft
marshmallow man scene
it’s a classic what did you do ray
oh we’ll get into that in a second uh my
favorite scene as an adult
is the scene in the mayor’s office when
bill murray loses it with walter pack
rising from the grave human sacrifice
dogs and cats living together
masses terrier enough i get the point
dogs and cats living together mass
hysteria
i forgot about that scene was your
least favorite scene my least favorite
scene was the library scene
of course oh oh in the beginning you
mean yeah
yeah uh i agree with again when i was
his age that scene definitely freaked me
out
uh but my least favorite is the
beginning is a little
slow you know it takes a little time to
get things kind of
moving and i’ll be honest when i rewatch
the movie
i kind of fast forward through the first
you know 15-20 minutes with them getting
everything together
the park scene the bank loan finding the
firehouse just getting all that together
the only thing i like is just bill
murray’s intro into the movie
when he’s doing the electroshock therapy
that still always gets me so now let’s
get to our favorite actor who’s your
favorite actor in the movie
dan aykroyd ray right yeah so yeah
raise ray’s a good one why’d you like
ray because he was really funny in the
movie yet
yeah i agree dan aykroyd kind of just
went off somewhere in the late 80s
earlier
could be could be with the ghosts my
favorite is definitely
bill murray but harold ramis is
definitely a shout out because
out of all the ghostbusters i always
wanted to be egon when i was a kid
but as i got older i wanted to be peter
venkman
uh who is your least favorite actor
walter peck yeah so he didn’t like the
character of walter peck i didn’t like
him so much i didn’t even want to look
up his real name
nobody likes you walter peck
uh my least favorite actor in the movie
i’m probably going to get some plaque
for this but sigourney weaver
lucy did he play uh he is a she
and she played dana in the movie bill
murray’s girlfriend the one who turns
into a dog
that was weird how why would they turn
her into a dog
hey it’s zul zul can do whatever he
wants or she
or whatever zul is whatever we also got
a new category which was suggested by
one of our listeners
it’s called unsung hero so basically
this is
who is your favorite like supporting
character who maybe didn’t have that
much time
but they really shined when they were on
screen who is your unsung hero
in the movie slimer climber i mean as a
kid who didn’t love slimer
um i had the slimer toys slimer was
definitely a favorite especially in the
cartoon version
uh mine louis tully
rick moranis was a revelation in this
movie
rick moranis please wherever you are
come back we need you
where have you gone rick moranis
is that what they said in the movie no
that’s what i’m saying that was my plea
to rick moranis
and a terrible simon and garfunkel uh
interpretation there
so yeah definitely rick moranis uh
recast
recall so this is where if we could we
would recast one role
in the movie so
then i would replace the nerdy guy
in the movie with jack black yeah so
my unsung hero is his least favorite
uh character in the movie uh aside from
walter peck he didn’t like
uh rick moranis i don’t know maybe it’s
an 80 saying but you roll you like rick
moranis and space balls
yeah it’s the only thing i liked him oh
that’s the only thing
um yeah jack black would have been
interesting yeah he would be funnier
stab me in the heart why don’t you
uh mine uh would definitely be the one
that should have been
and that’s eddie murphy uh in the role
of winston zed moore
over ernie hudson uh best line
what did you do right yeah that’s that’s
now an inside joke in our house
whenever one of us does something we’re
like what did you do ray
my favorite line is again from the uh
scene in the mayor’s office
dogs and cats living together mass
hysteria
but now the three most important ones
should it be remade
they tried didn’t work out well and now
they’re doing
i guess a reboot a sequel i don’t know
what it is
um right now yeah well remember we saw
the trailer for it
yeah yeah so i don’t know we’ll see
but i think you just leave it alone uh
the big one
would you want to see it again yes it’s
definitely a rewatchable
and on a scale of one to ten what do you
rate it
i give it a nine give it a nine give it
a nine and a half i’m taking the half
off for walter peck
and the fact that eddie murphy wasn’t so
those were the categories those were our
takes do you agree with us
do you disagree with us leave a comment
