In-depth Wyze 44mm Watch Review

well wyze is added again making
different things other than their core
cameras in this case smartwatch hello i am
Wanderer001 and this is my review of the
wyze 44 millimeter smart watch there are a lot
of other reviews out there of the smart watches
of the 47 millimeter smartwatch from wyze there
are not many of the 44 millimeter versions
and i want to tell you there are some major
differences when it comes to the software that
you run on the smaller version compared to the
larger version uh primarily i got the smaller
version well because i have smaller wrists and you
know when i rock something like my pro track here
it is a honker on my wrist and it it looks just
crazy even when i wear my smaller g-shock gulfman
it still takes up a suitable amount of wrist
space so the 47 millimeter version would have
been a little large for me however the
44 millimeter fits quite nicely and um
as much as it pains me to say this this would
probably be a better size for a woman’s wrist or
a small child i mean i will admit it i have small
dainty wrists so what you’re looking at with the
wyze 44 millimeter is well let’s start with
your

band you have your classic rubberized
band uh you could tell i was wearing this right
before the review because it does not look great
but then again it’s kind of the rubber band that
you get with a lot of other types of watches
you’ll notice that there is a slight cut out here
to allow for some breathing it it gets very sweaty
uh i was hoping for something a little more like
this where you have notches that allow airflow
underneath your wrist but for the price
point which we’ll discuss a little later
you’re not going to get that you do have the
classic watch style band which is kind of nice
and your fastener here is made of plastic one
touch that i actually really like is this right
here this when you have this around your wrist can
kind of hide itself in one of the notches there to
help keep it in place which i haven’t seen a lot
of places that did that and again this is a very
cheap smartwatch i will admit that this is also my
first smartwatch so take that with a grain of salt
after the band well the primary thing you’re
considering is the smart watch itself so the
casing for this is actually made of 6061 grade
aluminum i’m not gonna lie when i first got this
i thought it was actually plastic it looks kind of
plastic because it’s a very muted coloring for it
it’s not shiny it’s just it’s aluminum it helps
keep the watch very light which is kind of nice
it also is you know scratch resistant i’ve
kind of banged into it uh quite a few times
you can see a little bit in the corners
because that’s where i tend to hit watches
but it’s held up very nicely so far the casing
also has a singular button on the right hand side
nice easy to find press on it and it will turn
your screen on or cycle through to the next screen
and that’s it it does not turn the screen off
i kind of wish it did but i could see why they
didn’t do it the case itself is also water
resistant up to 2 meters for 30 minutes which
is kind of nice so if you do splash some water
on this you don’t have to worry about it the one
issue that i have found with the screen itself is
that it does have a similar problem shall we say
that the original fitness tracker that wyze had
first come out with had originally which is that
water running across the screen can cycle
through the screens i don’t know why that is
i can’t tell if it’s touch screen sensitivity
if it’s a software thing they have not yet fixed
it on the band as far as i know but uh kind of
looking and hoping that they do the smartwatch
on the back here you are looking at your
charging port right there what you get in
the box is a proprietary charging cable has little
magnets that help put it into place and i will say
that when you’re first setting this up if you
don’t know what you’re doing the magnets really
only go one way so you kind of have to make sure
that you have this in place correctly but you get
one proprietary charging cable for that no wall
wart so you will need to use a charging brick
you also have your sensors for your blood oxygen
levels as well as your heart rate the blood oxygen
level is a ppg sensor which is supposed to be 70
to 100 measurement range with 940 nanometer to 660
nanometer wavelength well what does that mean it’s
all talking about accuracy well how accurate is
the measurements that you can get with this well
let’s take a look and find out all right now it is
measuring the heart rate over on this side it is
indicating 119 and here it’s 100 and oh 16 15. so
there appears to be a one well much more now but
uh there appears to be a small discrepancy between
something like this and the one that you have
sensor wyze on your wrist it’s not terrible
again these things are not super accurate they’re
to give you a baseline or a generalized reading
we’ll do our oxygen next so we have on this
side 97 oxygen level and then we’ll check over
here and again they’re tools they’re not medical
devices but they are to give you a generalized
understanding of how things are going this
one takes a little longer you can see that
line around the outer side there as it’s
measuring getting to a point where it will
display a measurement hopefully right there okay
so 98 versus 97 percent so again a oh it dropped
down to 97 so now the two are reading the same but
it looks like you’re looking at about a one to two
percent difference between a device like this and
the sensors on your wrist those charging ports
on the back are also how you initialize the
setup of the smartwatch yes because you will
need a wyze account and the wyze app on your
smartphone in order to sync up your data so
why don’t we use this as a interlude into actually
seeing what the setup of the wyze watch looks like
this is setup of the wyze watch this will be
the same for whether you have the 44 or the 47
millimeter version so right out of the box
you see it has a sticker on it letting you
know you have to charge it to activate it so
we’re just going to take that sticker off and
then you can kind of see the watch face itself
after which we spin it around and we take off
the protective bit in the back because to
actually start the setup process for this
step one is to take the proprietary charging
cable and attach it in order to boot the watch up
all right so that’ll be interesting for later
that’s proprietary as to which pin goes where
but we missed a little boot notification
with wyze logo popping up there there’s a
qr code that popped up on the band so what
we’re going to do is we’re going to go back
and go to the app and say add a band and then
we should be able to put in that information so
off camera i have the now powered up band we’re
going to select add a device now it’s broken down
into these lovely unique categories so we are
going to say lifestyle there we go got the 44
or the 47 watch we’re gonna say 44 because
that’s what we have all right so it wants
camera lighting gotta love that it wants to allow
the uh wyze app to take a picture because it’s
going to want to take a picture of that qr code in
my case since i’m doing this on android i will say
only this time and now it wants me to go
over and scan that qr code so we’re going
to do that off camera so it did take a
minute there to uh line things up but
it is in the pairing process at the moment so
you’re going to want to keep the watch nearby and
we’re going to bring that into frame now because
the watch says pairing you’re going to say okay
to finish the pairing process which i did and the
qr code popped back up so we’re going to see all
right pairing failed we’re going to try this again
qr code is still showing up on the band itself
it is now showing okay we’re going to select
okay again and we see pairing up this time we are
successful you have to pick which hand you want
well it did say which hand did you want to wear
this on but apparently me picking it up and moving
it kind of messed with it so we’re going to click
back into that so connected disconnected all right
it’s giving me an error code that’s interesting
see if it connects again all right there’s a
firmware upgrade that needs to happen question
is will this take as long as the firmware for
the wyze headphones review over there in the
corner we’ll make a notation of the time it is
10 28 and we will not make you sit through that
so we’ll come back and hopefully that’ll be done
okay so it says that the firmware is up to date
however it is rebooting the device it took all
of about five and a half six minutes so the
watch right now is not usable because well it’s
rebooting thankfully the firmware did not take the
stated 20 minutes to actually download and update
part of that might be due to you know your wi-fi
connectivity so the faster that you can download
the faster you will get your firmware updated so
again it says it’ll reboot in three minutes we’ll
take it at its word and i’m not going to film that
portion all right so it finished rebooting and
there we go we got the watch face and it requires
you to enable background app refresh your watch
needs this because the app is running in the
background uh to perform certain features so you
can either dismiss this or you select learn more
and then it kind of tells you why i keep
it running in the background and then it’s
showing me my phone model which is a google and
then we can go to settings app notification wyze
advanced battery background blah blah blah or
we can just go to set and it brings you right
into where you need to go 96 battery which is
good so it shows that you know they ship this
with a full battery not terribly difficult at all
to set up which is very nice coming back to our
button on the side here this also acts as a power
slash reset button if we press and hold on this
you will be brought to a secondary menu where we
can power off the device or restart the device
powering your 44 millimeter watch is a 250
milliamp battery which depending on usage and
when you actually charge it can
last ridiculous amounts of time
y states nine days of use i’ve gotten anywhere
from eight and a half nine to 14 days depending on
what i was actually doing with this also at what
level i was allowing the battery to get down to
in some cases i would get it down to 10 and then
charge it and then other times i was taking it
down to completely dead depending on what level
you start charging it at you’re looking at about
two hours plus to recharge your device if you wait
for that ten percent you’ll be getting closer to
that two hour range but if you bring it down to
dead you’re looking at more like 2 hours 15 to
2 hours 20. again not terrible at all really you
will also start getting a nag screen at about 20
that your watch needs charging so depending on
if you can deal with the nag screen popping up
is whether you wait until it dies or not
to actually charge it one thing that you
may have noticed on this when we were looking
around the body before is that there are no
microphones on this so you cannot talk to this
and ask alex a questions like you can with their
fitness band likewise you cannot use this to
make calls you can decline a call using it
but you cannot pick it up so really the primary
means of communication this device has with you
is that it vibrates and depending on situational
awareness or your tolerance for vibrations of
certain types it might actually be unnoticeable in
certain aspects using it for an alarm to wake up
if you’re a heavy sleeper you might not notice
those vibrations it’s not terrible but again
it is a data point to keep in mind now that
brings us to the actual screen of this device
it is a 1.4 inch screen size and one of the
largest complaints that i have is compared to the
47 millimeter version the 44 millimeter version
has these super large bezels on the top and bottom
and i don’t know why there’s all that wasted space
it kind of upsets me that it looks like that but
when we actually turn on our device you you kind
of see a little better the uh the wasted space
you also may have noticed a little sluggishness
when flipping screens and that is most notable
when you bring in your notification shade you
can see it’s kind of chunky when scrolling and
it’s it’s just it’s part of the price point that
you get for this it’s it’s not terrible but it is
definitely noticeable on particular screens
there also is no adaptive brightness for this
and that means that you have to come down here
and adjust your brightness from one to five
now when set at five you can kind of see it
outside without a real issue i do one to two
inside and just generally leave it at that and
then kind of cup it if i need to see it outside it
does have a tilt to view option but i found that
on my particular wrist and where it sits it’s not
super effective so i find myself tapping the
button on the side a little more than i thought
i would again not terrible but just a data point
now you saw me looking at the user interface when
i was swiping from left to right and i will say
that the user interface actually is different
than you get with the 47 millimeter
version why wyze did that i am not sure
but let’s use this as a jumping off point to check
out the interface for the wyze 44 millimeter watch
this is navigation of the 44 millimeter smart
watch when you first either tilt up or touch
the side of the watch you will be brought to the
watch face depending on what you select is what
will actually show up here to change your watch
face when on all you have to do is press and hold
the center of the watch face until you get this
blue outline that zooms in from here you can swap
between your watch faces and whatever you happen
to be on for the last one will become your watch
face now the navigation is fairly simple with
your watch face if you pull up from the bottom
you are brought to either the brightness where
we can change this all the way up to level five
for the purposes of this i have it on level one
you can see up there your battery is displayed
this is your do not disturb mode which
will prevent any notifications from being
sent to the watch itself this down
here is your find your phone icon
which if we select this even if your phone
is in silent mode we’ll still ring it
as you can hear slightly off camera down here
this is our settings area we can come into here
and it will show us watch info i’m not going to
show you that because there’s private information
brightness we have a toggle
just for our brightness
here to go back to a previous screen simply
swipe from the left hand side do not disturb mode
we can turn on do not disturb mode which is
that quick toggle that we were accessing before
scrolling down you have heart rate selecting
this will allow the watch to continuously monitor
your heart rate so within normally five minute
intervals it will take your heart rate so that
it can chart it regulatory well information about
the watch fcc filings all that fun happy stuff
scrolling down you can restart your wyze watch
from here or you can reset your wyze watch from
selecting one of those two options we’re going to
swipe to the left again and then one more time oh
and then down because this was our original menu
that we swiped up from if you swipe down from
the top you will have your notification shade so
any email notifications text messages phone calls
that’ll all be listed there phone calls can
be terminated from the watch by clicking
a hangout button but you cannot pick up
the the phone call from the watch itself
if we swipe over to the right hand side here
you’re brought to your quick apps selecting
the first one here activity that lets you know how
much you’ve walked how many calories you’ve burned
your heart rate per minute and then hours sleep
this is the only thing that you can see when you
swipe over from that and the step counts a little
low because well i forgot to wear this today
sports what this will allow you do is in three two
one go it will monitor your miles run time beats
per minute and then calories and then your average
time and then to finish your run you actually have
to press on the side button there and we’re going
to say finished and it’s going to say that it
wasn’t long enough to actually register as a run
and i’ll say that’s fine this is the only activity
that the sports mode will actually track coming
down we have heart rate if we are wearing this
correctly it will measure your heart rate so three
two one and it will give you a heart rate reading
based on the flashy lights that you see there in
the background we’re going to swipe to the left
you have your blood oxygen level again selecting
this please wait while it measures again from
resting position you will have a red light
that will calculate your blood oxygen level
coming down further we have alarms uh i’m at
a loss for the alarms themselves i’ve tested
several different ways of doing this i thought
at first it was just my phone wasn’t connected
to the watch overnight i cannot get these to
work at all on the 44 millimeter one on the
47 millimeter these actually seem to work because
it vibrates the watch that starts to be where i
see significant differences between the operating
system for the smaller watch as opposed to a
larger watch if we come in and actually could
set these correctly you can toggle it on or off
clicking and holding on it will bring you into the
options which will allow you to set a time whether
this repeats or whether you’re allowed to snooze
if this worked it would be really cool because i
can come in here and i could select a specific
day every day timer does work if we select on
that you will get a stop ability to choose from
1 3 5 and 10 minute timers all the way up to one
hour or you can customize simply by selecting and
dialing in your own the timer’s not bad it’s it’s
just that it’s a timer you click on it and you
starts counting down so we’re gonna stop go back
weather depending on how you have this set up
in the wyze app will either target your current
location or where you have it set to you can see
a current forecast as well as a three-day forecast
next we have shortcuts there are no shortcuts
you have to actually use the app if you had a
shortcut you can have up to ten this will allow
you to quick set some of your wyze products turn
on and off camera turn on and off light but they
do have to be a wyze product in order to use this
here we have cycle tracking if you have the 47
millimeter version of this and you select mail as
part of your bio this is automatically taken out
however they don’t do that for the 44 millimeter
not saying that that’s a bad thing but why do it
for one and not the other if you need to track
your cycle you can do so right there and the last
application that we can access is our settings
which will give us watch info brightness heart
rate restart regulatory so all those things that
we could access originally from that quick menu
from up front now our watch faces one thing that
the 44 millimeter does have over the 47 is you
can have up to six different watch faces however
selecting a pull down from the left does nothing
you do not get those extra screens that you do
with the 44 millimeter if for whatever reason you
need to restart the watch because the screen is
unresponsive it happened to me once just click and
hold on the power button and then you can power
off or restart your device and simply tap to bring
it back so that has been the navigation for the
wyze 44 millimeter watch so there you saw if
you’ve looked at the 47 millimeter watch you know
that there are some striking differences between
that and the 44 millimeter why they did that i do
not know well the other way that you can control
your wyze watch is actually through the wyze app
so let’s take a look at what that looks like for
the 47 millimeter version this is the app portion
for the wyze watch 44 millimeter to start we just
come in here and we select the wyze watch and
you’ll notice the first thing that you do is sync
your data if you haven’t synced any data recently
that might take a little longer than what you saw
it will display your battery percentage right here
you can see i’m at 95 currently you also have
your selection of watch faces now the wyze 44
millimeter watch can hold up to four watch faces
at once currently these are the watch faces that i
have on my watch for display if i wanted to change
that i can simply come to edit and here we can see
they’ve actually increased it so you can have four
of six so this is only four of the six possible
for the 44 millimeter you have a smaller selection
of watch faces than you do with the larger band
which kind of annoys me a little bit but you have
some planetary themed faces right there you have
some flower faces you have color which really is
just a black face with a colored indicator for the
second hand these are actually the ones that i
tend to use the most one because it helps save
battery because black background and just the
color accent for the second hand you’ve got mixed
number where you only actually have one you’ve
got hollow numbers and you have numerical here
all the way at the bottom you have the possibility
of photos so what this is is here is the date
and time display and then in this black space
you can stick a photo so if i select this one
i can select add and that will add it we can
change our font color here and you can see
dynamically it’s changing up there so if i do that
and then i would come to background and select
a photo i won’t be doing that because i don’t
want to show my library but once we do that
it will add this to the watch so let me
quickly take a photo and i will take a picture
of my camera and then here is the watch face so
you gotta carefully pick where you want that to
go select that there we go that’s gonna be my
watch face i’m gonna hit okay and there you can
see there’s my watch face so maybe i want to move
that clock and date around there and i will select
add and then the new watch face will be added
to my watch now you will see this will take a
little bit of time to actually do so it’s not
instantaneous but this is going to give you an
idea of the actual time frame that it takes to get
from here to my watch and there we go that’s done
so if we put our app down for one second we can
see my watch is installing the new watch face
so this is the second part of that you obviously
will need to be connected via bluetooth
and there we can see there is my new watch face
that i just took and updated with the wyze app
what we’re going to do now is we’re going to hit
back because we’re done with our clock faces and
there you can see there are all my clock faces and
i spoke incorrectly before like i said there are
six possible watch faces that you can have coming
down we have your notifications area will allow
you to pick what types of notifications you
want to receive at all to your wyze watch
by default you can see up here you have the
option for phone calls and text messages
under other applications that are automatically
recognized by the wyze app and watch are your wyze
instagram gmail calendar everything else that
you may get notifications from on your phone
fall under other you will notice
that sometimes these messages up here
will show up as other on your wyze
watch keep in mind when i did this
originally i could not get notifications
from anything under the other applications
but an update to the wyze firmware made it so
that you have to allow two different permissions
to run in the background in order to get these to
work on your watch one would be to allow the one
to allow the wyze app for the watch especially
when you look at the update cycle or the firmwares
for the 47 and the 44 millimeter there that you go
into here in the release cycle allow for that to
be pushed through all these extra features you’re
going to select back because now we’re going to
go to stretch reminder what this will do is after
50 minutes of inactivity from the watch being
dormant but why not give you a little reminder
save yourself some trouble you see a little
stretch icon on your screen and buzzes your wrist
you can quickly tap the button on the side of the
watch to tell it to go away or you can actually
get up and do what it says you can also set this
between a time frame so for me i set it between 10
am and 5 pm this way it’s not at the very start of
my work day but it is at the end of my workday
so i don’t have this trying to tell me to get up
and stretch in the middle of the night or after
working hours activity goal if we come in here
you can see hey we’re going to set activity goals
and you can turn this on or off and it will pop
up with little notifications you’ve reached your
step goal you’ve reached your calorie goal these
are adjustable just by clicking on them there are
preset ones but you can change that to whatever
you’d like it to be as long as it exists within
the preset scroll coming back do not disturb mode
so for me i don’t want notifications or anything
being pushed so i turn this on and i set this for
10 pm to 8 am granted that’s not quite when i go
to bed but that’s when i’d like to stop receiving
notifications on my wrist you could turn this on
and off depending on how you want to use it but
this is how i use it rise to wake what this is
is moving your wrist to a position that brings
it into a wake mode i’ll admit this one’s kinda
hit a miss in my opinion it requires a lot of
turning uh more than i thought it would for this
to actually actuate correctly the beauty of it
though is you can set a start time and an end
time for when you’d like that to happen because
you don’t want to be raising your wrist in the
middle of the night and have this screen blaring
in your face so set a start time and end time if
you’re going to use this next which side are you
wearing your wrist on in my case i’m wearing on
my left hand but you could choose left or right
simply by clicking right here which seems a
little odd because you want to click up there
scrolling down running in the background well
the wyze app does need to run in the background
so you just just have to indicate what your phone
is and then it will take you to the menu where
you can tell to run in the background coming
down weather app you can either have it set
to automatically pick up the weather based on
your location i have that currently toggled off
because right here it will show the city where it
last picked up your weather in my case i have just
told it i’m in Gettysburg tell me the weather
in Gettysburg and that will be displayed in
the weather app on my wrist you can change your
temperature units between Fahrenheit and Celsius
and that is the weather app shortcuts well right
now i don’t have any shortcuts but you can have
up to 10 shortcuts accessible i don’t really like
the way that the shortcut works because there’s
like three to four levels of screens that you
need to get to to actually get to your shortcuts
but if we were to create a new shortcut we would
simply say add a shortcut and then just like you
would with your rules for one of your otherwise
products whether that’s a wyze cam or a wyze bulb
you can set parameters as to what happens when you
press this shortcut button on your wrist so you
could turn on a wyze bulb you could turn on or off
a wyze camera all from your wrist it’s it’s a nice
ad but in my opinion not the best use of the watch
coming down to the bottom that was all just on our
watch tab if we come over to our data tab this
is where all the information that’s being sucked
out of your watch is ending up here we could see
steps based on the current date and time because
everything sunk eight calories the o2 heart rate
and sleep i did not wear the watch this morning so
that’s why a lot of these are off but if we click
on any one of these items you could see that it’s
broken down to today i can select week or i can
select month and here you can see and then it says
monthly total daily average we can even toggle
between months if we want to and that is for
each of these items so here we can see calories
i can go to month that’s basic listing of the
calories so because the o2 sensor is not running
constantly in the background or doesn’t have the
option to run constantly in the background you’ll
notice that there’s a lot less data for that
however heart rate because i have that running
all the time you can kind of get an idea here
of heart rate and again last one and then a range
sleep sleep was interesting i kind of know i don’t
sleep very well here you can see average awake 32
minutes for this month four hours of light sleep
four hours of deep sleep if we come back to the
previous month monthly data right there you can
see it’s about the same but it is color coded
so that you can see this data if you wanted to
now the major difference between the 44 millimeter
and the larger wyze watch is this data or at least
some of this data is visible on the watch if you
get the larger one if you get the smaller version
none of this is accessible which kind of upsets
me my information that’s going to show you your
information male or female you’re born weight
height and we’re just not going to show you that
if i come back to the watch section that’s going
to give you information about the watch itself
so we’re not going to show that because that’s
mac address and all that fun happy stuff
but that is all the stuff that you can do
with the wyze application for the wyze watch
44 millimeter i do wish that they kind of had
a little more in the app selection but i kind
of get it it’s a cheaper watch you’re not going to
get a lot there but hopefully you found a portion
of the application for the wyze watch helpful so i
know it sounds like i’ve been harping on the wyze
watch and i have been a little bit but you must
keep in mind the actual price point of this watch
and i’m gonna give you a range because wyze is
doing some weird stuff with their pricing model
right now you can get the 44 millimeter version
between 20 to 25 depending on where you get it
if it is on the actual wyze website or another
website one of the problems i had right before
i was doing this review was i was looking up
some extra data points that i hadn’t put down
originally and this watch the 44 millimeter is
not on their site anymore and i don’t understand
if it’s they are not making it anymore or if
they just took it down because they need to
produce more models but generally when they do
that it says sold out under it i had to use the
wayback machine to actually get some information
about this watch so i am concerned that the 44
millimeter version of this watch may no longer
be available because again this is the perfect
size for a child or somebody with daintier wrists
such as myself the one thing to consider with the
watch whether it’s the 47 or the 44 millimeter
version is that you get one watch per account
so 144 millimeter or 147 millimeter if you have a
small child they will need an account of their own
is that bad no is that good in that you have a
cheaper lightweight fairly accurate and usable
throwaway watch at that price point
again depending on how you view 20 to 25
it’s up to you but in the grand scheme of things
when you’re looking at a smart watch in general
uh you’re looking at hundreds of dollars
so just like their fitness tracker
which undercuts a lot of the competitors out
there you will undercut a lot of competitors
with this particular watch as well it does
lose a lot of the extra bells and whistles
and functionality and maybe smoothness
that those more expensive brands will have
but if this is your first foray into a smart watch
it is well worth checking out with that being said
i have been wanderer001 if you have any questions
