Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa Movie Review

There are a few films, that don’t have any haters,
and ‘Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa’
is one of those feel-good films.
And I am sure, the 90s kids would
have watched this film in their childhood
and must have enjoyed watching it too.
Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa was released in 1994,
and is the story of Sunil,
played by Shah Rukh Khan.
He is not good at his studies,
but he is a musician
and works as a drummer in a music band.
Because of Sunil’s carefree attitude,
he sometimes gets a thrashing
from his father or other band members as well.
Sunil is in love with his band’s lead
female singer – Anna.
And the film revolves around
the incidents that take place in the life of Sunil.
The film is directed by Kundan Shah,
who previously has directed classic
like ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron’
and one of the best Indian Television series – Nukkad.
For Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa,
he used a similar approach of a feel-good factor,
which looked simple yet extremely effective.
There is also a romantic angle,
which also worked well for the film.
The screenplay of the film is excellent,
which makes you laugh
and gets you emotional at the same time.
In the

scene of the film, when Sunil tops his exam,
his father organizes a party for his friends.
And at the party only, he finds out
from Sunil, that he has failed his exams,
and that the mark sheet was fake.
This entire sequence could easily
be termed as one of the best
of all the Indian films released in the 1990s.
There are many other scenes
in the film that keeps you smiling,
and the climax of the movie was also a little different,
at least compared to the other films released at that time.
Since 1994, Bollywood filmmakers
started to change their approach to the films.
In the early 90s, action films
and action heroes were admired by the audience,
but Shah Rukh Khan had a small yet different fan base,
as he was considered a romantic hero
or had an image of a next-door boy.
He was liked very much in these kinds of roles.
SRK’s movies like Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman
and Chamatkar were a hit at the box-office.
And his persona matched well with
the character of Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa.
And he was appreciated well enough for his performance.
The character could have looked non-sensical,
if they would have showcased it as a little over-confident.
But SRK should be praised enough,
for adapting the nuisances of the character aptly.
The other actors in the film are – Suchitra Krishnamurthy,
the film’s lead heroine
and the love interest of SRK.
It was her first Hindi film,
and she was also OK in it.
Deepak Tijori is also in the movie,
who could be described as
the most underrated actor of the 1990s.
There are a few veteran actors too like
Naseeruddin Shah, Satish Shah, Goga Kapoor, and Anjan Srivastav.
Another strong point of the film is its melodious music,
which was composed by Jatin-Lalit.
Every song matches the theme of the picture
and gives a great feeling even today as well.
Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa is a low budget,
and Kundan Shah faced
various difficulties creating Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa,
regarding the financing of the film.
A few actors like Naseeruddin Shah
didn’t even charge for the film.
But still, the entire team
director, actors, writers, and technicians..
should be commended enough
for creating such a masterpiece on a very small budget.
Even after the completion of the film,
distributors were not ready to buy Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa,
for around a year or two.
And when a few films of Shah Rukh became hits,
then the distributors got interested,
and finally, the film was released.
And the film was loved by the audience.
It was watched mainly on Cable TVs or VCRs,
and was declared a semi-hit by the trade experts.
So, I want to conclude that ‘Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa’
is one of the most underrated films of the 1990s.
And as much as we honour and celebrate
Shah Rukh Khan’s DDLJ, KKHH, Dil To Pagal hai,
we should celebrate Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Yes Boss,
Chalte Chalte and Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa too.
So, that’s all for today!
