Max Scherzer comments on Mets after Robertson trade

Steve Phillips is awesome to have U on this desk as a former GM. Is that normal? That signature players deserve conversation during the time like this? Well, I think, you know, part of it is his future the right. I mean, there’s been speculation about him and Justin Verlander potential being traded. And I think when you have a veteran guy, I like that, they kind of want to know what they’re going to do when I traded for Al Leiter from the Marlins. David Browse. He told Al Leiter everything he said, listen, I got two offers both

about the same ST Louis New York. Which one do you want to go to? He’s like, of course, I want to go to New York. So with veterans, you tend to bring them into the process a little bit more. They understand that its a business and yet fill them in so that they’re not shocked by it all because the weigh you treat one star, the word spreads and it helps U recruit the next star. And if you mistreat one of your star players, then other player’s become leery of wanting to join your team. So that

level of honesty, communication is really important. Not only for her, him but for the next guy I too. So if it, we’re confident that Verlander is probably going to get traded, do you think I wouldn’t trade either one of

them would know because here’s why they might be overpaid for what they are right now. But money is not a factor for the Mets. And so if U trade them, then if you’re gonna compete next year, u need to replace them. So who’s better than Verlander insurers are going into next year’s Lance Lynn better than them.

Not for me is Lucas Giolito better than them. Not for me is Marcus Stroman not going to go back to New York and he started thinking okay, well, if not them than who and I look at it and think alright, if money is not a factor, they’re going to be overpaid, they’re still going to be effective. And so I’d rather have Verlander and Scherzer, then let me go to sign Julio Urias, bring them into my rotation, you know, replace Carlos Carrasco and let that be the rotation where you got another guy out in front of

those two guys. I’m not trading them. What do you think of holding on the Verlander and Scherzer after you traded your closure last night? Yeah. Well, look the reason it’s not to me, it’s not so much holding onto them as it is. Where are they going to go with the amount of money that is still on that contract? And are you gonna have to just pay that off? Because if you’re going to have to pay that off, if you’re Steve Cohen, you might as well keep them around and why pay for them to play somewhere

else at that amount of money when it just wouldn’t, makes sense. I would much rather have them on team next year and see if they can give it another go, see if this team can give it another go. Now, look, if they can get them off the books completely, then yeah, then I’m considering it, but at the same time to Steve’s point, how do you replaced them for next year? Because that is 2/5 of irritation and not just to fifth , that’s the top 2/5 of your rotation this year and what you expected it to

be next year. I think there’s a player option from Max Scherzer. He’s probably gonna opt into that matter what it’s $43 million. He might want to be traded. He might not like the situation and if there selling, he doesn’t at this stage of his career wants to play for a team thats selling. So we might see a demand coming up. I don’t think you’re going to demand. And my view is I’ll talk to the player, I’ll communicate, get his feedback, but I’m going to do what I want to do. I’m not going to do what

that player wants me to do. And if he want to be traded and it’s not a good trade for me, I’m not going to make it. I’m going to do what’s right for my organization, he signed with us has got a contractual obligation. And so I’d keep an open mind, but I’m going to do what’s right for the Mets trying to read in to what he said there and this is hearsay but trying to read it. It wasn’t necessarily, I’m upset that we traded David Robertson and I, you know, and I need to go talk

to the front office. It’s, he said we put, we put ourselves in this situation and we Maeda move. I can’t fault them. But I want to know what the plan is. If he goes to Billy Kepler or you know, the front office and they say, look, this is the plan , this is what happened. We felt we had two, trade him. We’re keeping, you were keeping Verlander were making this runs. We think we can add one or two and be there too compete next year. What’s to se why would max not except that and say

yes, absolutely. Ok. Let’s go do it. A different rules for future Hall of Famers like Verlander ensures that you want to be candid with guys like that.
