ONE PIECE Chapter 983 | Review & Analysis

What’s going on everybody!
My name is Ohara and today we’re gonna talk
about the latest developments in One Piece.
Oh boy!
Chapter 983 gave me some proper goosebumps,
I’m not gonna lie.
And I also can’t wait to hear all the power
scalers out there go crazy about all this.
But honestly, for me personally, this chapter
was actually excellent in terms of power scaling.
And if I had to give this chapter a topic,
I would probably say it’s power scaling,
but at the same time creating even more unpredictability
than we already have.
And of course there was also so much else
going on that we have to talk about.
If you enjoy these reviews and want to keep
‘em coming, don’t forget to like and subscribe.
And now, without any further a due, grab yourself
some coffee and let’s jump right into the
chapter.
While I usually skip this part, I think today
it’s worth talking about the cover story
once again.
As was already hinted at, Pound is actually
alive and has found his way to Dressrosa together
with the Tontatta, where he’s meeting Lola
and Chiffon.
I personally am no big fan of Pound being
still alive, as it somewhat lessens his heartbreaking
sacrifice on Whole Cake

Island.
Now, I’m gonna give Oda the benefit of the
doubt here and hope that this will still have
some sort of payoff, especially since I think
Bedge and the Tontatta would make a quite
interesting team.
SO, let’s wait and see what this cover story
will lead to in the end.
I guess, the most obvious answer would be
that they will be heading towards Wano together,
though to be completely honest, I hope that
doesn’t happen too soon.
I think the group that is there at the moment
is pretty interesting as it is!
And speaking of Wano, let’s get back to
where the action is.
The chapter opens up with something unexpected.
Perospero has apparently abandoned his other
siblings and has climbed the waterfall on
his own using his jelly slug.
Now first of all, congrats, I think that’s
actually a smart thing to do, I just wonder,
why he didn’t bring anyone along with him.
Now, I’ve already mentioned this a couple
of times before, but I really have the impression
that Perospero does not really bow to the
authority of Big Mom.
It seems like he sees himself as something
like the true leader of the Big mom pirates,
that pulls the strings from the shadows.
He openly states that he wants to prevent
the alliance from happening and use this war
to make the Big Mom pirates the sole winners.
Now, did he leave his crew behind, because
they disagreed with him, especially smoothy?
Or did he maybe bring them along somehow inside
his jelly thing?
One way or the other, it looks like Big Mom
won’t be completely alone anymore for long.
And while I really dislike Perospero as a
person, as a character, I’m really excited
to see what he can do on his own and how he
is gonna try and infiltrate Onigashima.
Going with our themes of this chapter, I would
say Perospero confidently going into enemy
territory on his own, definitely does something
in terms of power scaling, and it also raises
the level on uncertainty.
Next, we return to the brothel, where Big
Mom apparently has abandoned chasing after
the tank with Usopp and Chopper and has decided
to follow Nami, who has taken away Zeus from
her.
Once again the entire Big Mom sequence is
loaded with a shit ton of comedy.
Big mom hitting the tank and the tank changing
shapes is pretty hilarious.
Also kudos to Franky for building something
that can take a punch from a Yonko.
Also I think the comedic twist Oda threw in
here with Nami and Usopp is pretty damn funny
as well.
Last chapter, Nami put off Big Mom chasing
Usopp and Copper as no big deal, and in this
chapter Usopp does the same to her.
This is exactly the great dynamic between
the straw hats, that has been missing in recent
arcs, where the crew was split up.
And of course we have Sanji, who instead of
facing Big Mom, decided to “save” all
the prostitutes in the brothel.
While Prometheus, who is guiding Big Mom towards
them, has evidently not been taken by Nami
yet, I think it’s great to note that Zeus
apparently prefers staying with her for now,
and I think that is a pretty big hint that
he might be a permanent upgrade for Nami.
He looks genuinely worried however, which
is pretty understandable in his situation.
Since the group is heading towards the Live
Stage, where most of the action is happening
right now, I think we can add another uncertainty
point for this.
Because at the live stage, we can see that
Orochi didn’t waste any time and has already
had Momo crucified in front of the party crowd,
and poor momo looks in really bad shape.
Also, as always Queen seems to be in his element,
cheering on the crowd.
Meanwhile, we get two pages for each Zoro
and Kid, who both seem to have a harder time
with Kaido’s men as some might have thought.
Now while some might be frustrated with the
power scaling for Zoro here, I personally
don’t believe that Zoro will have too much
trouble fighting his way through here.
Also, I honestly think it is refreshing to
see that the gifters are actually more than
just fodder for the crew.
They are a key component of Kaido’s crew,
which he has built to wage war on the world.
So, I think it’s only to be expected that
they would pose at least some sort of resistance
to Zoro and Co.
Also, it is once again hinted at that the
gifters might also include some former captains,
as one of them talks about their crushed ambition
to become pirate king themselves.
Similarly, Kid also seems to be struggling
a bit with the mass of opponents he has on
his plate.
So, I think we can add 2 more power-scaling
points, just to tease a few people.
Now however, it’s time for the best part
of the chapter in my opinion, the first proper
fight we get on Onigashima.
Luffy and Ulti definitely have an awesome
dynamic here, even if it doesn’t look like
Ulti will develop a liking for him, as I originally
thought.
Nonetheless, this scene gave me absolute goosebumps.
First of all, however, the comedic start to
this encounter is pretty much gold.
Ulti calling out Luffy for hurting her beloved
pay pay, while she was actually the one who
rode him down the stairs like a sled, and
Luffy being irritated by it, works so damn
well as a joke, because it is actually such
a Luffy thing to say and do.
Just image the situation the other way around,
Luffy riding down the stairs on zoro and calling
out Ulti for it.
Easy, right?
And I think that’s what makes the two so
compatible.
Then of course, we have the head-but scene,
which is just pure awesomeness, especially
since Ulti hasn’t even transformed yet.
And I’m not completely sure, but is that
conquerors Haki we see there with the black
sparks?
Or is that simply their strong armament clashing?
Let me know what you think in the comments.
The next scene however is probably the best
in this chapter: While the scrubs in the room
are all convinced that Luffy has had his head
cracked open, Ulti and Page one immediately
transform into their loan forms.
This reaction is so good and I think it shows
not only how strong Luffy is, but also that
the two Tobi rope also are advanced and experienced
fighters.
Ulti saying, that she acknowledges Luffy’s
skill, really says something, based on what
we know about her character.
So maybe she will end up liking Luffy in the
after all.
Then of course, we have to talk about Ulti’s
devil fruit, the Dinosaur fruit model Pachycephalosaurus…
wow, that’s really hard to pronounce.
It’s not exactly what I expected for Ulti,
but it fits reeeaaally well I believe, a small,
but powerful and agile ancient Zoan is really
cool.
I guess this means that most of the flying
six will be ancient Zoans as well.
Depending on their Fruits, this could be really
cool, but I kinda hoped to see some more regular
powers as well.
I think sabertooth Who’s Who would be really
exciting though.
The fight itself is also amazing, Luffy one-shooting
page one, but then being surprised by Ulti’s
strength is just as great, also that he prepares
to go into gear 4th against her.
So, big power scaling points for the 3 of
them here.
And then of course we get the ultimate mind
fuck at the end of this chapter.
Wait did I say, Ulti acknowledging Luffy was
the best scene of the chapter earlier?
Yeah, that was a lie of course.
Yamato appearing out of nowhere and one-shoting
Ulti with Kaido’s technique is pure insanity.
And then Yamato picks up Luffy and runs off
with him telling him that he’s been waiting
for his arrival all this time.
What the hell?
What’s going on here?
Okay, big breath, there’s of course a couple
of things we have to discuss here.
Firstly, Yamato’s design.
I’m very very grateful that so far, Yamato
looks pretty badass and he also seems to be
quite powerful.
Notably, Yamato seems to be significantly
shorter than Kaido, which is a bit weird,
but when we look at Big Mom and HER children,
not too uncommon I guess.
Then of course, there is the One mask he is
wearing.
For some reason, Oda has decided to hide Yamato’s
face for now and I really wonder why.
I would normally speculate that we have met
him somewhere before, but as he has to confirm
that Luffy is really Luffy, I think that’s
not very likely.
The other thing that sticks out, is his outfit,
that really is reminding of Oden’s.
Is that a coincidence?
Or is Yamato a fan of Oden?
I know, some people will speculate that Yamato
actually IS Oden, but I don’t see that theory
making any sense, at least right now.
Also, Yamato seems to be wearing sea-stone
shackles, which means that Kaido seems to
be controlling some sort of devil fruit power
he must have.
If Kaido is afraid or at least concerned about
it, it must be something quite powerful I
believe, even if it’s simply to prevent
him from fleeing.
Now the big question of course is, will Yamato
be an ally to the straw hats?
And the fact that Luffy can feel no ill will
from him is a very strong indicator, that
at least for now, that will be the case.
And, I know this is me fanboying badly, but
I´m gonna say what we’re all thinking anyway:
How dope would it be if Yamato, the son of
Kaido were to join the straw hats?
There, I said it and I stand by it.
What a crazily fun chapter.
