Review: The Mercedes AMG Super Car

would be a dream to drive a Formula 1 car on the  
streets… Have you ever stopped to think what 
such a car would sound like on the motorway?

History has already shown us several times 
that brands often give a taste of what it’s  
like to bring a racing car to public roads.
 
* Ferrari did it with its F50 25 years ago,  
and now Mercedes brings us its latest innovation: 
the AMG One.

In 2017, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the 
AMG Project One concept car. The idea was simple:  
to bring a Formula 1 car to the public streets.
 
After being approved for production – 275 units  
to be exact – preparations to adapt the 
technology from the Mercedes AMG Petronas  
team’s Formula 1 car began in full swing.
 
With a view to starting production by 2022,  
and after its 275 exclusive customers 
have paid 2.3 million (or $3.2 million).

Now, let’s get started!
*  
F1 engine
The radical concept of this 
model is a challenge for the engineers  
because it is not easy

to adapt an engine designed
for Formula 1 racing to public roads. But the
Mercedes team managed to solve this problem with
a few modifications to the original engine.

The engine taken from the Mercedes F1
W07 Hybrid is a 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrid
with 950 horsepower. The power unit fitted to the
AMG One is limited to 11,000 RPM and idles at 1200
RPM.
Mercedes claimed that the throttle response
is more direct than a naturally aspirated engine,
as the turbocharger is constantly spinning
thanks to the electric motor attached inside.
And when the turbo is idling, the engine
becomes an electric generator that harnesses the
rotational energy of the blades. Genius, don’t
you think?
But that’s not all! The AMG One has
three more electric motors – one on the crankshaft
and two in the front differential – which add an
extra 100 horsepower and give a mind-blowing 1050
hp. What a machine!
* Electrical systems
In case
it wasn’t clear, this model is a plug-in hybrid.
Behind the seats is the 800-volt lithium-ion
battery pack, which gives a range in EV mode of
16 miles.
It also has an extended range mode that
uses the internal combustion engine to recharge
the batteries, a hybrid model that uses all the
motors, and an extreme mode that squeezes the
maximum performance out of the car.
In the latter
mode, the fastest laps on the famous Nurburgring
track have been achieved in recent times…
absolutely amazing.
So much power in the driver’s
hands is measured out thanks to the active torque
vectoring system, which transmits just the
right amount of power through the corners,
making the AMG One a safe hypercar at all speeds.

To complete the section of the electrical system,
this car takes advantage of the smallest
mechanism to generate power and re-use it.
In addition to the turbo’s electric generator,
the braking system incorporates kinetic energy
recovery technology to recharge the batteries.

And guess what? These energy recovery systems
were brought straight from Formula 1. Absolutely
stunning!
* Exterior and interior design
The
exterior design of this car was intended to
offer as little air resistance as possible.
Smooth lines mould the bodywork, carefully
sculpted to the point of making the Mercedes logo
a simple stamp on the front bumper.
At the front
are two air intakes with active aerodynamics,
depending on whether the driver needs more
downforce or more air to cool the front brakes.
On the wheel arches are flaps that increase
downforce, and are activated in extreme mode.

A huge air intake peeks over the roof of the car
to cool the engine. Right on the engine cover,
there’s a flap that channels the wind, and at the
end, there are two spoilers in one: one stationary
and one that serves as an aerodynamic brake.
The
interior of the car is a feast of carbon fibre and
alcantara for lightness. The pedals and steering
wheel are adjustable as the carbon-fibre bucket
seats are permanent.
The steering wheel
is styled like a Formula 1 steering wheel,
and the dashboard and centre console displays
offer the information needed to make settings,
change driving mode, and real-time data and
telemetry.
* Performance
We’ll save the best part
for last: the numbers. If you weren’t impressed
with the 1050 horsepower of this tame beast,
get ready to fall out of your seat.
0 to 38 mph
in 2.2 seconds or less! This monster accelerates
much faster than a Bugatti Chiron, which takes
2.5 seconds to reach 62mph. All the power is
transmitted to the rear wheels to reach a top
speed of over 218 mph! That’s 217 miles per hour.

To reach these numbers, Mercedes engineers
put this model on a strict carbon fibre diet,
just as they do with their Formula 1 cars.

You could say that the gap between the AMG One
and the Mercedes of the current F1 season is not
so wide after all.
The Mercedes AMG One is not
the only hypercar in existence that seeks to bring
the sensations of a Formula 1 car to the streets.
Around the corner, Aston Martin’s Valkyrie,
in collaboration with Red Bull Racing,
is the AMG One’s natural rival, bringing the
two teams’ competition to the public roads.
