Seasons After Fall | Chilled Out Game Review [REUPLOAD]

Welcome to Chilled-Out Game Reviews where
I review the best games to unwind with.
Seasons After Fall is a puzzle-platformer
game with beautiful visuals and a wonderful
music score. You play as a spirit which is
possessing the body of a fox in order to awaken
the Guardians and gain the power of the four
seasons. Swapping between each season will
cause various aspects of the environment to
change. This is the mechanic used to solve
puzzles, as different plants and creatures
will only be available to interact with in
certain seasons.
I instantly fell in love with the art style
of this game. The hand-drawn design, the use
of vibrant colours, the distinctive feel of
each season; I don’t think I can fault the
visuals in any way. The music and sound design
are just the same, I cannot fault them. It
is excellent at generating a mood to reflect
the changing environment which greatly enhances
the experience. This game has been designed
almost entirely as an interactive art piece.
And therein lies the problem.
It’s all well and good creating something
that is beautiful, but a game, especially
a puzzle-platformer, needs an emphasis on
gameplay and level design. The world is wonderful
to walk through, which is great because you
are required

to go back and forth through
the same areas repeatedly. Some of the puzzles
require a little lateral thinking, but they
are re-used throughout and are not very interesting
on the second, third or twentieth time round.
It’s also not very good at letting you know
what your next objective or destination is.
On several occasions I was given vague instructions
and then found myself wandering about aimlessly,
waiting to stumble across the story again.
Although it’s nice to not have your hand-held
all the time, there is sometimes a need for
a little assistance. This is especially true
after returning to the game after a few days
away from playing, and makes it almost impossible
to pick back up again.
I really wanted to like this game. But although
I found it very relaxing to start with, this faded
away as I got increasingly bored and frustrated.
I can see why so many people do like it but
I just found it to be all style and little
substance. So sadly I have to give Seasons
After Fall a Chill-Out Rating of 2 out of
5.
