TRDQ: UNITROBONE/BORNE?! Applelobster + Tree-Rex Review

As Youtube’s favourite Transformers collector without an ounce of sense I bought these two sets at TFNation this year. Everyone immediately fell into two camps – one group said “Those are cool but not worth the price” – and there were people like me who said “I must have these, no matter the cost”. It’s a sickness. So I can’t really work out the name of the line here – Unit Robo One? Unit Robone? Unitrobone? Still they are rad as fuck and worth looking at. First up is this Lobster/Apple combiner – each individual piece is unassuming enough. It’s

a wee apple – and a…wee lobster. They don’t feel too solid but nor do they feel cheap. Not much to write home about – BUT if you slam their bits together here – whoomph we have a big robot! Eventually – there’s a little bit of manual pulling and pushing to make sure it’s able to stand. Which to be honest I was a little disappointed by. But still, isn’t that cool? Bigger than you’d expect too. I don’t know the lore behind this but there’s all these music motifs – like the audio visualiser stickers – the eyes

are music notes? It’s – good?! It does absolutely nothing but as something to look at on the shelf and question a lot of your spending habits? Can’t beat it. Or can we? Next

up is this nice Taxicab and…Pine Tree? – yeah – yeah it’s a pine tree. The taxi is extremely cute – a little chibi wonder with a nice amount of detail. The tree is…well let’s be honest it’s a tree. Whoomph get those together and we have a Tree-Rex! Look at his tiny arms and his cute face. I love it. Again those visualiser stickers bring

some much needed vibrance to the back end – and he can open his mouth too. These are weird little things – curiosities for sure. I’m taken with them, really. Now you’re probably asking – can these things swap parts?! Well – yes they can. First up we have this lad I’m called AppleTee and sure – cool. We also have his fantastic merging of Lobster and Tree – to create…I don’t know…Lobstree? They obviously don’t work as well without the designated partner but it just all adds to the charm, doesn’t it? There’s more in this wave – A

Shark and Vending machine – A Bulldozer and Burger – a Stag Beetle and a Train… and more! And they all look…pretty excellent. Although in the next wave we have a cake and ambulance that becomes a gorilla and that has to be captured for the Monkey Shelf. I do love things like this, though -, easy to mess around with – endlessly playable and always something you can show off to folks, even if they’re not into toy collecting. There’s something about the absurdity of it all that crosses barriers, y’know? And if that’s true, maybe maybe you can

start on the road to getting some respect around here.
