Tim McCarver remembers the 1967 Cardinals World Series team

Our sports director Frank Cusamano had the opportunity to sit down with the Hall of Famer Tim McCarver to relive that magical season. How dominating was that team? You won 101, you won it by 10 1/2 games. How special was the 67th squad is? It was very special. I think in the history of the game. Orlando separated come over from the Giants in 1966. Was an amazing force. I think we all fed off Lou Brock. We became better players, we became better. Base runners. He opened our eyes to how you can run the bases. And of

course, Bob Gibson opened our eyes to a lot of other things. From a competitive standpoint, you were behind the plate when Gibson got hit and broke his leg, but he didn’t come out right away. What’s the story? Well, he threw 5 pitches, 1 the one hitter after Clemente. He walked on four straight pitches and then collapsed on the second pitch to the next hitter. That was Bob. I mean, Bob was one of the toughest guys in the world, a legend in right field in the sunset of his career. The numbers were not eye popping, but

you don’t win without Roger Maris, right? Had Mike Shannon not moved from right field, Mike Shannon was a brilliant right fielder. He’d never played third before. Had he not made that move? That doesn’t set that team up. But by

Mike moving to 3rd, and that made room for Roger and Wright Field. It was a it was a great ball club. We’ve had three Hall of Fame managers here recently, Larussa so calculating. ****** ****** Ball, that style with red. Why was red shading so special? Because he didn’t try any of that stuff. He knew that we

knew how to play the game. We’ve said that many, many times before. We were trained well, we were trained in the Cardinal system. Final thought. It’s a 50 year reunion. I know you’ve seen these guys a lot over the years, but when you see these guys now, that bond, it just comes back right away, right? It does. Yes, the 67 team was. Was you hear that a lot, that it was special. Why was it special? Because we had such respect for one another, we knew how to play. We knew we had a manager that would

allow us to play and we went out and played and won 101 games.
