Celebrating National Pizza Day with a fun contest

Welcome back to your friends today, National Pizza Day. We’ve said that a few times on this show. Samy’s offering heart-shaped pizza kits so you can make your own all month long. And on Tuesday I participated in a pizza making competition at Samy’s Del Mar for charity. Chef Alfie, executive chef at Samy’s here to talk about this and how to make our best pizza here. So stiff competition on Tuesday I must admit we had seven competitors, media personalities and the winner used like truffle oil and all fancy stuff. And I went with the the triple pepper

punch, which I think the name was good. Yeah. But it just kind of felt. Visually. It looks good visually. Thank you. But what what do you think I did wrong here on this national pizza day? We’re talking all things pizza. Did it. Was it too much? Pepper is I think is it. Can you have too much? Partially. The heat level, the OK spice level, I think. And then and then also there’s just a lot. There’s a lot of stuff. Yeah. Like the sausage, the Peppers, the tomatoes. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I’m taking it. I’m taking

it with a grain of salt. I’m gonna. I’ll be back next year. I’m gonna mix it up. I think you’re right. It was just maybe a little if you bring

the heat next year. You gotta go last. You gotta go last. OK. If you’re 1st and you blow out the pallets that you know, then it does. Well, you guys did the order on it, didn’t you? I I I’ll request to be last next year. Yeah, that’s. Yeah. When you’re looking over at the judges and they’re sweating, probably not a good sign. No. Especially when it’s

like the first piece they tasted of the day. Yeah. When is that the end? It’s like I was still learning here now. Third time is a charm. For next time, show us what we got here. Some of the cool creations you’ve made. The thing, the thing that’s so cool about pizza. First of all, everyone loves it. There’s very few things in my house all the kids agree on. And pizza is one of them. The heart-shaped pizza yesterday, they had a lot of fun doing that. This is just something you can just kind of create for

whatever you desire, right? Pretty much. So show us what you got here and what some of your favorite combos are. So this is our classic Margarita, just really, really nice, simple but effective sliced tomatoes, basil BBQ chicken, kind of like sort of more of a modern one. Not, not like a really classic one, but we’ve had that for a long time as well. So the New York style here is kind of like your meat lovers, big fan of that. We have the goat cheese there, which is my personal favorite. This also comes on our thin

crust and then we got yours here and again yours yours visually looks good you know but then after you show the other four and and the simplicity but but that’s like the flavour going through it that’s the that’s this was just a little little overblown everyday should be national pizza day in my in my opinion right. I mean talk about what you guys are working on there at samy’s I know you guys are a hot spot for pizza and everything you guys got tons of locations too now yeah we’re we’re saying. Easy. We’re we’re pretty

much from Oceanside to Chula Vista at this point in San Diego. Couple airport locations, so you can check those out. LAX and Las Vegas. A few locations in Vegas, two with Taverns. Awesome. Yeah. And the winner of this competition, by the way, another personality, another TV station. Congratulations. You actually did a really good pizza. She’s going to be on the menu, which is cool. And then her. Yeah, her charity of choice is getting $5000. So we did have fun at this, but it was a chance for, you know. Good cause here too. Yeah, it’s raining.

There’s the group there. And there’s Ali in the center there. The blonde in the center over at USI. She won it all and so congratulations to her. But it was fun. Yeah, fun. Heather one last time. So she passed her crown on to absolute time. We got about a minute left. So what is the advice that people making pizza here today? Or if they’re seeking a good pizza, what should we be looking for? Less is more, less is more. I did not learn my lesson. Find a good place to buy dough. I would skip the

whole dough making process. It’s a it’s it’s difficult. It’s it’s a pain. I’ve seen you guys make your dough and there’s a ton you were talking to me about like the water consistency of it. I’m like what? It’s like a science to. Yeah, the moisture content is important. So we sell our dough as well you can. I mean any grocery store sells dough. Most pizza places will sell ball of dough. So yeah, that’s a good start. Keep it simple, but make sure it’s all the flavors you have. Come. Let’s stick to under five ingredients, five
