[Music]
for me i’ve heard many stories about
this heroic period
but i never really understand life doing
war until i read this book called
the mountains sing my review today will
include four parts
part one is some quick information about
the author
part two is a brief summary part three
are some of my personal favorite things
in the book and the last part
are some of my suggestions for you guys
[Music]
when fenway mai was wondering the
vietnam war time in 1973
she grew up with nesting the war’s
destruction and its consequences
in 1992 she received a scholarship to
attend university in australia
she’s the author of eight books
including poetry fiction
and non-fiction she has been honored
with many awards
including the poetry of the year 2010
from the hanoi

writer association
she is currently living in jakarta with
her husband and two daughters
the mountains singh was a truly
remarkable novel
about vietnam war time during the 20th
century
written by with fangue mai the journey
of the chen family
through four generations was told by the
voices of two women
gramma ziolan and her granddaughter hung
in grandma’s narrative she told us about
her life
as the daughter of a rich family in the
village
it was full of joy until her father was
killed
by the japanese soldiers during a trip
to hanoi
after that during the great famine in
1945
she lost her mother and her
sister-in-law due to starvation
but it was not until years later that
she had to face the greatest challenge
of her life
her husband was killed in a political
meeting just before the land reform
reached her village
in 1955 when the land reform reached it
her brother was murdered and she was
forced to flee the village with five
children
her oldest child lost in hung’s
narrative
she talked about growing up during
wartime and herd had turned her family
apart
who lived with her grandmother because
her parents and
uncles all went to war her mother was
kidnapped
and raped her uncle died and her uncle
dad lost one of his legs
but worst of all her father had left her
forever
he left her a wooden bird that he carved
which represents his love for her
in every aspect of her tale we could see
the pain and loss
that the war cows and no one can escape
this novel is a call for peace around
the world
and as einstein has already said peace
cannot be kept by force
it can only be achieved by understanding
this novel helps us to understand life
during wartime and its aftermath
through simple but thought-provoking
words
i like how the author tells the two
journeys alongside
because it helps me to see how the war
has affected different generations
grandma has lost her father brother and
her son because of the war
hung has lost her father and her mother
suffered vigorously after coming back
many of her friends and neighbors have
died because of the bombings
many others cannot go to school and food
was sometimes unfindable
it also shows how different regimes were
run at different times and how each job
was treated
the land reform had turned the family
apart and killed
gong grandma’s brother later on
grandma became a traitor to save her
family and uncle sang stop
talking to her because the whole society
treats them as
leeches who live in other people’s blood
besides the author did a very good job
of showing how people change
over time it helps me to see the reason
why people change
not only how for example how grandma
spoiled sam
her youngest son and how he had sold the
family
just for some political reasons but i
think
the most special thing in this book is
that it’s not a journey of traveling
but rather a journey of time a journey
about life
about war about surviving hardships and
it teaches me a lesson
that to survive the hottest journey we
need only take one step at a time
but must keep on walking this novel
would be suitable for you
if you are looking for a story about
family and love it will also be a great
book to help you understand more about
war and overcoming challenges
it is a wondrous novel with a lot of
profound lessons
throughout and i highly recommend it for
teenagers
