Astrud Gilberto, the smooth-voiced Brazilian singer whose version of “The Girl From Ipanema” introduced bossa nova to much of the world and is likely one of the most recognized popular hits of all time, has died. Gilberto’s son, Marcelo, confirmed to The Independent that she died on 5 June. The cause of her death was not disclosed. she was 83. One of Brazil’s biggest stars of the 1960s and 70s, she recorded 16 albums and worked with artists ranging from Quincy Jones to George Michael. Her version of The Girl From Ipanema sold more than five million copies and helped

to popularise bossa nova. Born Astrud Evangelina Weinert in Salvador, Bahia, on March 29,1940, the vocalist’s path to stardom began serendipitously in 1963 after she accompanied husband and musician João Gilberto on a trip to New York to record alongside saxophonist Stan Getz and fellow Brazilian bossa nova star Antônio Carlos Jobim. In 2008, the bossa nova icon received a lifetime achievement award at the Latin Grammys. Friends and family members were devastated over Gilberto’s loss.
