I’ve had an update from the investigation team which is working at PACE to understand why and how this terrible event occurred today and the Auckland CBD at 7:22 a.m. police received multiple emergency calls with reports of a person. Discharging a firearm from inside. the third floor of a building under construction. at the

bottom of Queen Street. police were on scene. at the site within minutes. we continuing continuing to piece together the entire sequence of events. But what we know is as follows the offender made his way follows. the offender made his way up through the building sites discharging his firearm on multiple occasions. police entered, the building within 10 minutes. staff from various groups right across Tamaki Makoto responded and members of the public. inside the building were evacuated wherever possible. We know that several workers found Refuge hiding inside. the building during the event. At around 8 a.m. armed

offenders Squad supported by special tactics group. located the offender. inside a lift shaft. where he had barricaded himself. and attempted to engage

The building has now been cleared and the lockdown, remain in place remain investigations continue. This was an incredibly alarming incident for workers who were just starting their day. We’ve contained the situation. and are not seeking anybody else. We have not formally. identified. The offender How we were however we We understand, he has worked at the construction site. and believe, the reason for his presence at the

site this morning was connected with that work. we know and work in the vicinity, may be feeling vulnerable. However, we can provide reassurance, that there is no reason for ongoing suit there is an increased police presence in the area. and we reassure the public that they can continue to come into the Central City. come into the Central City. remains Cordon while our team undertakes the scene examination, We are communicating with local and central government and We’ve been part of the planning for the FIFA Women’s World Cup. for some time. I want to acknowledge this has been a shocking end traumatic event for those people who came to work and found themselves in the middle of an armed. emergency. Thankfully, many the building. but I know that for those who had or remain trapped this was a terrifying experience. I can confirm that the offender is the subject of a sentence of home detention However, he had an exemption, to work at the site and so there’s no indication at the stage of a breach of those conditions. But what I can say is any time these decisions are being taken there is a weighing of risk and the system works with what it knows that the time. Whether this was foreseeable is not clear to me. I can’t give you the exact detail on that. We have been in touch with FIFA officials

and provided. Reassurance about what the policing. profile will be for these events. I don’t I don’t believe so because this is not a situation that appears in any way connected to the event.
