Alaska earthquake today! Magnitude 7.4 earthquake hit near Alaska Peninsula

On Saturday, July 15, 2023, the United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 7.4 earthquake near Sand Point, Alaska. The earthquake occurred at 10:48 pm local time, at depth of 32.6 km and was relatively shallow. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences which listed the quake at magnitude 7.2 as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the

quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. In Kodiak, sirens sounded late at night. The quake prompted a tsunami warning for parts of Alaska near the Aleutian islands but was lifted a few hours later. Light shaking probably occurred in Sand Point located 66 miles from the epicenter, King Cove 80 miles away, Cold Bay 98 miles away.
