Stephen Strasburg retires, ending historic Nationals career

Big news on the future of Washington Nats pitcher and former World Series MVP Stephen Strasburg. Yeah, Charlie McBride is in the studio with us tonight in Charlotte. You know, this news you’re about to tell us is really, you know, something that’s fans felt was coming all along, huh? Yeah, guys, Stephen Strasburg has been battling injuries for the past few years, so this news doesn’t come as exactly a surprise. But Strasbourg is retiring from baseball. Our partners of the Washington Post were first to break this story Today. The 2019 World Series MVP plans to hang up

the glove next month. Strasburg was the first overall pick in the 2009 MLB Draft. He rose to success through the net system and peaked in 2019, ultimately helping the Nationals win the World Series. But since signing A7 year, $245 million contract after the 2019 World Series, Strasbourg has pitched just 31 and a third innings in the last four years as injuries have piled up for the 35 year old righty. Back in 2021, he had surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome, which involves the compression of nerves. He had a rib and two neck. Muscles removed. But according

to the post, he is still dealing with, quote severe nerve damage and struggles with daily activities which involve his right hand. Strasbourg will leave the game a World Series champ, a

three time All Star with a 113 and 62 record and a 3.24 ERA. Well now Strasbourg still has three years on his contract. No word what this means for the money he was set to get, which guys is about 35 million a year. A tentative news conference to officially announce his retirement is scheduled. For September 9th, has to take care of himself first. You know,

I, you know, I mean when Charlotte, when you report this stuff about what happened with Stephen Strasburg we’re reminded of the toll that the body takes when they are these kind of athletic. You know repetition over and over and over again. We sure are. And we thank him for all he did for our city. Yeah, I got a World Series. He sure did.
